CHINESE POLITICAL PRISONER SUES YAHOO IN U.S. COURT
A Chinese political prisoner and his wife sued Yahoo in
federal court Wednesday, accusing the company of abetting
the commission of torture by helping Chinese authorities
identify political dissidents who were later beaten and
imprisoned. The suit, filed under the Alien Tort Claims Act
and the Torture Victims Protection Act, is believed to be
the first of its kind against an Internet company for its
activities in China.

EU ADVISORY BODY CRITICIZES GOOGLE'S PRIVACY PRACTICES
A European Union advisory body that monitors data privacy
has written a letter to Google Inc. warning the No. 1
provider of Internet searches that its practices fall short
of EU data protection standards, according to a person
familiar with the group's plans. A Google spokeswoman
confirmed that Google received an earlier letter from the
Norwegian Data Protection Group, which has a representative
on the regulatory body known as the Article 29 Working
Party.

MICROSOFT TO PAY UP TO $180 MILLION TO SETTLE IOWA LAWSUIT
Microsoft has agreed to pay Iowans up to $180 million to
settle a class-action lawsuit that claimed the company had a
monopoly that cost the state's citizens millions of dollars
extra for software products. The $179.95 million settlement
means individuals in Iowa who bought certain Microsoft
products separately or preinstalled on computers between May
18, 1994, and June 30, 2006, will be eligible for cash.

STATE DEPARTMENT'S GOT MAIL, AND HACKERS
A break-in targeting U.S. State Department computers
worldwide last summer occurred after a department employee
in Asia opened a mysterious e-mail that quietly allowed
hackers inside the U.S. government's network. In the first
public account revealing details about the intrusion and the
government's hurried behind-the-scenes response, a senior
State Department official described an elaborate ploy by
sophisticated international hackers. They used a secret
break-in technique that exploited a design flaw in Microsoft
software.
